Canon hits 50

Megapixels, that is. Yup, Canon is developing a 50 megapixel CMOS sensor. What’s even more remarkable is that they’re packing all that resolution into an APS sized sensor – twice as much as any of its competitors, and more than most medium-format digital systems. Does this mean we’re going to see a Canon 1D Mk4 soon? I wouldn’t bet on it.

Engadget reports that Canon is developing the sensor for use in surveillance and factory inspections. It isn’t the most exciting prospect for consumers, but hey, we know that most of us don’t really need those extra megapixels, right?
