Your Photo: Our Critique

6thstreetbridge
This night shot has been sent in by Shawn Duffy.  The positives here are Shawn’s use of a smaller aperture allowing the lights on the top of the bridge to have a starburst effect and the leading line of the bridge.  To improve on this shot a shorter exposure should be used to prevent the highlights from blowing out.  The LCD can be misleading so next time take a few shots with different exposure times or try bracketing your exposures giving you an option to merge them.

Of course your right Melissa but blown highlights and all,I love this shot.I think it's "So close you can taste it" and worthy of four stars. No offense intended toward anyone but as I have said before, your critique is nothing more than your opinion and your opinion is no better than mine.I love this shot!

It looks like Shawn tried to get as much detail as possible overall - and so he lost details on the bridge. Sometimes, it is okay to lose details like the bottom of the bridge if it means that you can keep something much more dramatic instead, like the details on the bridge support. A solid three stars and great try.

I don't mind losing highlights in this case because you trade it off for more details in the shadowy areas. The only thing I would have done different is straighten up that leaning tower a bit. Liquify!
