Your Photo: Our Critique

Benjamin Esau submitted this image taken with a Pentax KM, with an exposure of 1/30sec at f/3.5, ISO 1600. This is a nice photo to start with but there are some things that could be improved upon. The biggest problem is the light shining straight into the lens of the camera. Use that light to your advantage.  Realizing room is limited backstage and this may not have been possible, move around or wait for the performer to move, blocking the light, which creates a rim light around him. There is a lot of clutter in the foreground, consider holding the camera higher and minimizing the foreground. Often we find ourselves in situations where we have no control, people or things are in our way but we still need to come back with a photo. We have to be a bit inventive, quickly assessing all of the problems and considering every option to create the photo.
