Your Photo: Our Critique

Critique 1e

Charley Adrisano submitted this image taken with a Canon 40D, with an exposure of 1/80sec at f/11, ISO 100. The opportunity was there for a great photograph, unfortunately the flags are not as vibrant on both sides and they appear to be washed out and somewhat overexposed on the side that was photographed. Placing the building behind the flags was a good idea but it almost gets lost. Consider cropping this image one of two ways, either crop some off across the bottom of the frame or crop out the top flag. Despite its brighter colors, cropping out the top flag tightens up the photo.

"The opportunity was there for a great photograph, unfortunately the flags appear ....washed out and somewhat overexposed...."

A missed

"great photograph", Melissa? Despair not! Forget about the cropping, everyone is so ....tight about cropping lately, and suggest the magic trick: Turn the picture into B/W and "somewhat" overexpose it! That should "dry out the flags" too, and bring out the "great picture" you suspect it is there.

Why "placing the building behind the flags makes it a good idea"? Cropping the top flag eliminates the ONLY flag catching the eye, and all is left is the building to the right and the trees grabbing all the attention.

Sorry Charlie! My commendations for your tribute to our national holiday is the most I can give. Emerging "greatness"? That I leave to Melissa. She is the expert.

The correct "suggestion" (see above): "Somewhat UNDER expose it" (to correct the alleged overexposure).. Sorry for the original misprint.
