Fujifilm Instax Mini 7S Instant Camera Officially Available in the US
With Polaroid out of the picture for affordable instant film photography, Fujifilm is bringing the Instax Mini 7S over from Europe and Asia where it has already enjoyed a lot of success. The $99 camera looks like a piece of modern art and has a built-in flash and a fixed 1/60-second shutter speed. Its equipped with what the press release calls "high-end" fujinon optics. At $99, we're not talking that high-end, but it still probably trounces the quality of the old Polaroid you got at the thrift store.
The film comes in packages of 10 for $20. Each sheet has an ISO of 800 and glossy finish. The images are only about the size of a credit card (the film is 2" x 3" and the image itself is 1.8" x 2.4"), which is a little small, but if you're looking for an instant solution that doesn't involve lugging a portable printer around with you, this seems like a viable solution.

This was known as the Polaroid Mio when Polaroid imported them under it's own name. Fuji made the Mio camera and film for Polaroid. The only difference was that Fuji made them in a dreary gray and boring shape for Polaroid. You can pick them up on eBay for ~$10 and buy the film from B&H. The color and sharpness were much better than Polaroid film!

As a life-long photog adventurer and polaroid lover, I praise Fuji for their instant photog film and camera, but at $2 per shot...? For $0.45 per shot I get my "instant" photog kicks with the Polaroid Pogo printer which uses Zink color 2X3 photo paper. Pogo is not as fast as Fuji's set-up but it sure works great in concert with my bluetooth camera phone. And only $0.45 per shot for fairly instant gratification.
For someone who wants faster Polaroid Pogo gratification, check out the new digital, Pogo camera with built-in color printer using Zink color photo paper. Amazon has a detailed description.

What is "film"? F-I-L-M. I'm not even sure how to pronounce it. Is the L silent?

I bought one in England years and years ago and haven't had film for it for too long! It's a gorgeous little thing, lovely quality. I have used it at parties and then just given all the pics to the host, it's great for that kind of thing. The film's coming out on the pricey side though so perhaps I won't be able to be so blasé about it in future.
