New Gear: Pentax K-x DSLR
Pentax has introduced a new entry-level DSLR today in the form of the K-x--not to be confused with the classic KX. The body draws heavily from their K2000, but adds a few key upgrades like HD video and Live View. The kit checks in at $649 with an 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 DA-L lens. There's a new lens options as well, in the form of the A L 55-300mm zoom lens. The HD video mode is capable of capturing 720p footage at 24 fps, which is a plus for those who like their footage to look cinematic. Pentax is positioning this 12.1-megapixel camera as the next step up from a point-and-shoot, but also claims it would make a great back-up camera for advanced users.
It also looks like the US will finally be getting in on the brightly colored DSLR action. The K-x will be available in black and Stormtrooper white (that's not the official name) at launch, but limited quantities of red and blue kits will be rolling out to select dealers. While we couldn't care less about the color of a camera as long as it produces great images, this seems like the price point where aesthetics might actually drive sales. We're just glad they stayed away from pink. All the important details and more pictures after the break. --12.4 megapixel CMOS sensor with sensor-shift Shake Reduction
--2.7-inch LCD with Live View
--Face detection up to 16 faces

Now Pentax is really back on the game. Since its first DSLR release rumor had it that P was standing on shaky ground. After its merging with Hoya, the release of K7 and the expansion of its DSLR line P is back again, powerful and competitive. Well done P!!

Pentax is finally becoming a viable alternative, and worth a serious look. This is an entry level game changer. Why would you buy a rebel if you can get so much more with this.
And there is all that amazing pentax glass out there to be had for a song.
With the K-7 to migrate up to and the rumoured 645D coming in 2010 you can now migrate vertically within the brand as well, as you grow in your photography
Excellent job Pentax

Agree with the other comments. Now what will it take for some of the third-party lens makers (I'm talking to you, Tokina!) to make their best lenses in something besides Canon and Nikon mounts? Sony Alpha users should be miffed, too.

Pentax have been a great innovator and historically a major player in the SLR field. Nice to see them coming back in the DSLR world with the likes of the K-7 and now the K-x ...and soon the 645D.

The old Pentax glass isn't all that available or that cheap anymore - prices have been skyrocketing in both the new and used markets.
